The fourth and final full session of the Player Development Programme (PDP) took place at East Sussex National on Sunday, February 22nd.
With little golf being played by anyone in the last month due to the awful weather we have been experiencing, we were keeping our fingers crossed for the session. Coach Jack Budgen and PDP Manager Sara Whittaker planned for both good and wet weather just in case!!!! ......And yes, the unpredictable weather kicked in and we ensured the ladies/ juniors stayed dry and hopefully warm.
Good use was made of the excellent practice facilities at East Sussex National with 3 groups utilizing the indoor facilities. After 40 minutes, the groups rotated, allowing everyone to engage with the tasks presented. Jack Budgen, the coach, led a group in the studio with a nearest the pin challenge. Another group found themselves in the teaching bays warming up and hitting a range of shots. The final group carried out a putting exercise which needed precision and speed of thought. As the rain subsided, we ventured out onto the putting green for it only to “rain cats and dogs again”!
All returned in and the groups were mixed up to move around the previous 3 stations. Each exercise had a competitive element whether individual or as a team. The banter and camaraderie amongst all the players was great to hear and bodes well for the competitive season.
After a short break for lunch we again ventured outside and split into 2 groups. A par 16 chip and putt was held on the chipping green and Jack set up various drills on the putting green. The day culminated with a bunker clinic led by coach Jack. The whole group were able to descend onto and into the West course 18th bunker to follow the clinic.
An abundance of good solid practice, unfortunately we could not get out on the course, but we do hope all participants found the day useful.
So with the PDP programme now finished for this year a number of players are looking forward to practice matches at Willingdon Golf Club over the next two weekends.
Other players are looking forward to attending a knowledge and practice session at Worthing Golf Club (March 21st) in readiness for County Match week. This will be followed by practice matches against The Dyke scratch mens team and the Worthing scratch mens team.
