Player Development Programme: Session 2

The second session of the Player Development Programme (PDP) was held at East Sussex National on Sunday 30th November.

The Ladies met for coffee and were introduced to Hellen Barlow - Yoga for Golfers Coach. The session was billed as ‘move better, swing better, play longer’ . Half a dozen of the ladies in the session had done yoga or pilates previously but it certainly inspired the ladies to rethink as to whether they should be doing more to condition their bodies, and help their breathing which would in turn benefit their golf!!!

We headed off out in two groups to the practice facilities. The groups switched over halfway through the session so all covered the same material.  Jack Budgen (coach) took half the group to the range where they hit a mix of shots whilst chatting through their individual goals for the winter and upcoming season.

The other half of the group were put to the test with their short game and asked to play the simple shot!!!! A par 16 chip and putt was the order for the session led by Sara Whittaker (Sussex Team Manager). Some great scrambling skills were seen across the groups with 1 player finishing level par and many just 1 over.

It was great to have 2 of the juniors with us for the day. Whilst 5 girls were in Spain at The European Open and one was attending England Regional training! We worked hard last year  with Karen Parks (Junior Director) to integrate the girls and aid a smooth pathway transition for the juniors to 2nd/1st team.

Later, the ladies headed out onto the East Course to play the new par 3 course. At the end of the day we have the best ladies in Sussex represented here! We know they can all hit a long ball off the tee. However, winning matches comes down to putting the ball in the hole! At this level it is the short game that wins and loses matches. Playing off the mats to the greens led to some very competitive scores even though we had suffered torrential rain in the lead up to this comp!!  Emma Carberry came out on top winning the gross prize along with the par 16 chip and putt prize. The net comp was won by Gillian Garcia on count back from Emma Bullock.

From the feedback received it appears all enjoyed the day and are looking forward to the next session where we have a Q & A session with the former player and now DP World Tour Commentator Jamie Spence. This takes place on 17th January at ESN.

Thanks to ESN, coach Jack Budgen, Hellen Barlow (yoga) the players in the PDP, county captain Margaret Brown & Junior Director Karen Parks for their continued help and support.
