Sussex 2s vs Kent - Stovold Trophy

Sussex 2's last game of the season against Kent at the beautiful Sundridge Park.  Whilst the course is close to London, just 7 miles away from the capital, it is an oasis of calm. The course is interesting and the greens rolled beautifully, however there were some very tricky pins after a major men's match held at the club over the previous weekend.

Sussex travelled up and practised the day before and were ready to try and gain as many points as possible.

The morning foursomes saw Tracy Poulsom (Royal Ashdown) & Sian Southereton (Bognor) charged off to a commanding lead which they held onto finishing on 14 - 5/4  Mandy Hilton & Emma Morgan (Crowborough Beacon) settled and had a very nip and tuck game finishing all square on the 18th. Likewise Sam Morfee & Emma Bullock (Worthing) were up and down and also gained half a point finishing all square.
.

In for lunch and Sussex were leading 2 - 1 as we returned to the 1st tee for the singles. Team manager Sara Whittaker (Willingdon) was happy with the playing order and was just after 3 points to get the win. Some fantastic golf played by both teams however, Kent netted more birdies than Sussex!!! The team battled away but unfortunately it was only Emma Bullock that managed to gain half a point after again finishing on the 18th green all square.

The team were disappointed with the final score of 2.5 - 6.5 after such a promising start, however there were positives for each individual which they must take away from the match experience.

**********************

Sussex finish 4th in the Stovold Trophy final league table. The camaraderie amongst the squad, which has included juniors this year, has been excellent. The competition for places in Team Sussex has significantly galvanised on the back of the Player Development Programme, Junior development academies and the performance squad, all of which are producing some excellent players  The juniors had an amazing match week and I am sure will be pushing for 1st team places, whilst others will gain more match experience alongside the players in the 2nd team.

Details of the PDP (Player Development Programme), due to start again with trials at Willingdon (26th October) for players with a handicap of 9 - details will be on the website soon.
