Our junior squad of 10 girls, 4 making their debut, represented Sussex in the annual Southern region Junior County Match Week which Sussex hosted at the superb Worthing Golf Club from 17-20 August. The weather was kind with no rain but it was a tad gusty for much of the time, a pretty common challenge being on top of the South Downs. Worthing’s legendary tricky greens provided a proper test for all the girls. We witnessed some stunning golf from the very best junior girls golfers in the South region!
Guided by our awesome coach, Rob Callaghan, the team were super prepared for the challenge ahead and they did not disappoint coming third overall – pipping last year’s winner Hampshire. Team Sussex worked together brilliantly and we saw some outstanding performances. We award two trophies each year to the team. One for the girl who scores the most points in their matches and one who embodies the Spirit of Sussex “on and off” the golf course. The winners this year were Sophie Jones who just edged out Amelia Roberts on countback and Elena Teubler retained the SoS trophy.
