After a short summer hibernation, the Seniors were back to it in the Mulligan Larsen Trophy / League this week. This time it was a home game against fellow contenders, Kent, at Pyecombe which is always a very competitive and tight affair.
The Team had lost a (wo)man in action, Clarissa Bushell (West Sussex) due to injury travelling to Scotland but Sussex kept calm and carried on.
Leading from the front and fresh off winning the Division 1 finals on Wednesday with Worthing was Karen Sykes. She was up against Kim Morris who is regular player on the Seniors national circuit and both slugged it out, not literally thankfully, with Karen just being pipped by Kim.
Being 1 match down, next up is the Dutch heritage match with home player Aileen against Tita, all very cagey and a close affair with an honourable half.
Paula Carver, also coming off the Division 1 finals win with Worthing, played new face Jen and went down on the 1st, after threatening her putter with eBay, she turned it around to win 4&3.
So tensions were high, 1 ½ - 1 ½ but up steps Iona McKean (West Sussex) who is the fiercest of match players. She went 3 down after 3 but nothing fazes our Scottish dynamo and she rallied to turn it around and win the match – her opponent was convinced she had shot 1 under par – just another day at the office for our Iona!
Sussex edge ahead now but unfortunately Katherine Russell (Royal Ashdown) was struck by a migraine and was seeing stars – literally, so Kent took advantage of her being on the ropes and won that one. Score now 2 ½ - 2 ½, no one from Sussex can watch, preferring to hide out in the bar biting their acrylic nails.
Up steps the leader of the Team, Sara Whittaker (Willingdon) in the last match, she had an inkling something was amiss because the Kent team were waiting for them on the 18th. That's no pressure compared to a PE class of teenage girls. Sara was already dormy 1 up so just held her nerve and trotted it home for the team to secure the win! Final result, a Sussex win 3,5-2.5.
A tense but competitive day and our thanks go to Pyecombe for hosting, providing a great course and the catering was awesome!
Oh and thank you goes to our additional Team member – the course notes! Dictated by Aileen and written by Karen whilst stuck in traffic travelling 11 hours back from Scotland. This is a confidential document – for certain eyes only, eat your heart out MI6!
