SCLGA SCRATCH FOURSOMES 2025 – DAY THREE
The third and final day of the Scratch Knockout Foursomes 2025 saw another glorious Spring morning, bright and cool with a gentle breeze. Such a benign start gave no hint of the dramas to unfold later.
All four teams in the semis put on quite a spectacle; great golf (of course), thrilling hole by hole match play, nothing to separate the teams from the start, totally absorbing and nail biting to the end.
In the first semi-final, it wasn’t until the 19th hole that Worthing were able to overcome West Sussex. But in the second semi-final, Dyke Yellow and Royal Ashdown Forest battled on to the 21st hole before the latter emerged victorious. All four teams gave it their all and should be congratulated.
.
After a brief respite for some well-earned lunch, Worthing (Paula Carver and Karen Sykes) and Royal Ashdown Forest (Katherine Russell and Fiona Champness) walked to the first tee again for the final (both clubs having faced eachother in the final in 2024), and the supporters that had come along to spectate were treated to a truly superb display of golf.
It began with a civilised half for par on the first hole, but Worthing edged ahead on the second. On the third, a par five, the shot of the day – in fact of the tournament was played. Paula Carver faced an uphill third shot to the green, and played a perfect pitch shot that slam-dunked into the hole for an eagle! They won the next hole too, putting them three up, but Royal Ashdown were not to be put off, pulling one back on the fifth hole with a birdie. The next two holes were halved in par, the eight was halved with birdies, but Worthing also birdied the ninth to go back to three up. At this stage Worthing were three under par gross.
The second half continued to thrill, with Worthing going four up at the tenth, but Royal Ashdown rallied to win the eleventh. So back to three up for Worthing. Unbelievably the next four holes were halved (three to par), leaving Royal Ashdown needing to win all three remaining holes to force a sudden death playoff. Unfortunately for them, both teams parred the sixteenth, so the match ended with Worthing winning three and two and retaining the trophy for the 2nd consecutive year. For those interested in statistics, Worthing were still one under par gross at the end, quite some going.
I think it is fair to say that this year’s event was memorable in more ways than one. We were very lucky with the weather; Piltdown Golf Club were wonderful hosts as ever; the course was in superb condition; the catering was up to its usual high standard, and all matches were played in the true spirit of the game, friendly but fiercely competitive. Worthy winners indeed, but great play by all those taking part.
SCLGA would like to thank all clubs that entered the competition, supporting this prestigious event, and we look forward to welcoming clubs back again next year.
