Sussex 2nd Team, Stovold Trophy
Thursday 4th July 2024, Liphook Golf Club
The Sussex 2nd Team played their first Stovold Trophy match away against Hampshire recently. Although the morning had dawned bright and clear there was a steady north-westerly breeze, as the team arrived early at Liphook Golf Club. The course at Liphook was in magnificent condition but it also presented a very demanding test for the Sussex Team, many of them seeing the course for the first time as they arrived on the day, as securing practice rounds had not been an easy task. The Hampshire players had a distinct advantage, having recently played their County Championships at the course.
The morning Foursomes matches were all tight over the early holes, but on the back nine the undulating and extremely fast greens took their revenge on the Sussex players and there were many putts that wandered well past the hole, despite some very gentle touches being applied. At lunch the match score was 2-1 to Hampshire.
The afternoon singles matches proved very challenging for Sussex, with the very strong Hampshire team winning 5 out of the 6 games, with Sussex securing a half point in the final game. The overall match result was a 7.5 to 1.5 home win for Hampshire.
Special mention must go to Sam Morfee of Worthing GC who was representing Sussex for the first time in a competitive county match. Sam started her day by sinking a birdie putt on the first green in her Foursomes match in the morning and then showed steely determination in her afternoon singles to secure a very hard fought half on the tricky 18th hole. Very well played Sam, we hope you enjoyed your day!
As ever, the match with the Hampshire Ladies was played in great spirit and our thanks also go to Liphook for a warm welcome, a well presented course, and delicious food in glorious surroundings.
