Stovold Trophy: Sussex 2nd Team vs Hampshire

A bright and breezy morning on the edge of the South Downs was the setting for the latest 2nd Team Stovold Match Trophy match v Hampshire. Ham Manor golf club was the venue, a lovely parkland course presented in fine condition.

The match throughout the day was tightly contested, but generally with strength in depth throughout their team, the Hampshire players came out on top in the games. After some early hole promise the morning foursomes could have gone either way with Hampshire just edging two of the three matches on the 17th & 18th holes respectively.

So with a 3-0 morning deficit to overcome, at lunch Sussex knew what they had to do, but unfortunately Hampshire fortified by a hearty lunch continued to pile on the pressure. Holly Crompton had an excellent 5&4 win in the afternoon & Jordan Ouano showed grit, determination and some fine short game skills to close out her match 1Up. Sian Southerton clawed back from 3 down with 3 to play to finish A/S and another battling performance from Sara Whittaker secured another well earned half on the 18th.

The final score was a 6-3 win for Hampshire, with Sussex reflecting on leaving themselves too big a mountain to climb in the afternoon singles games. As always when we play Hampshire the fixture was played in a highly competitive yet very friendly spirit.

Thanks go to all the Management, staff & Lady Captain at Ham Manor GC for their warm welcome  & hospitality throughout the day.

Sally Brown

2nd Team Manager
