Sussex 2's v Hampshire - Stovold Trophy

Sussex 2nd team opened their campaign in the Stovold Trophy at home to Hampshire. Bognor Golf Club were super hosts and the weather was kind to us although a little gusty in the afternoon. The team which had a different look to it from the previous season had 2 players from the juniors and 2 players who had played for Sussex 10 years ago and have come back for more via the Player Development Programme which was run through the winter.

The morning kicked off early with the foursomes. Suzanne Taylor (Bognor GC) & Emma Morgan (Crowbrough GC) along with Emma Bullock & Sam Morfee both of Worthing GC lost their battles 3 & 2 although they fought hard. Olivia Corbin (Chichester GC) making her 2nd team debut and playing up from the juniors was paired with Sian Southerton (Bognor GC). They brought a brilliant point home winning 2 & 1 and leaving us with a chance in the afternoon singles.

Lunch and a chance to rest and reset. Sussex need to bring home 4 more points out of the 6 on offer in the singles to win the match.

Suzanne was sent out first and after a valiant fight lost on the 18th green. Emma who played 1st team many years ago, had a real battle on her hands against youngster Chrisha. Her experience saw her through for a win on the 17th 2 & 1.

Sam and Joy Shi the 2nd junior who plays her golf at Cottesmore were outplayed by some excellent golf from their opponents. Scoring here was tremendous and Sussex struggled to get a grip on either game. Emma was out at 5 and after a tough time in the morning foursomes really started to stamp her authority on the game. An excellent point taken on the 17th with a 2 & 1 win. So with Sian out last could Sussex get the last point. The result of the match was a win for Hampshire but manager Sara Whittaker would love the match to finish 4 - 5. Unfortunately, another loss on the 18th hole and a disappointed Sian. Final result Hampshire win 6-3.

The day showed great golf, competitiveness and friendship from both teams. Sussex should take confidence away from this game as Hampshire had a strong team. The new look team are back in action on Monday 21st July at Ifield against Middlesex.
