County Match Week: Day One Report

CMW Day One Report, Monday 23rd June 2025

Sussex v Surrey

After spending Sunday playing the course in a Practice round everyone was keen to get started with this years County Match Week (CMW). Thankfully the high temperatures of last week had reduced and it was a much more pleasant temperature for golf although very windy.

First off today were Karen Sykes and Maddy Harris in the Foursomes followed by Heather Tidy and Katie Field. The Singles matches came next with Darci Lewis-Bradbury, Amelia McGinty and Chloe Briance.

Surrey are formidable opponents and they didn’t disappoint. Unfortunately, they had their strongest team out today including some English internationals. The standard of golf on both sides was wonderful to watch and with two juniors playing in their first CMW and the manner in which they held themselves, the future of Sussex golf is looking bright.

Amelia was the first to succumb to some awesome putting from her opponent who didn’t seem to make any mistakes today whereas Amelia's just shaved the hole. Shortly afterwards we recorded our first win with Karen and Maddy winning on the 16th. Our second foursomes pairing lost on the 14th leaving the final two matches too close to call. Both matches then went to the 18th green and could have both gone either way.

The final result of the morning session 4-1 to Surrey.

Sussex v Hampshire

After a very quick turnaround the afternoon match against Hampshire got underway. The first foursomes pairing were Karen Sykes and Maddy Harris followed by Aileen Greenfield and Darci Lewis-Bradbury. The singles players were Holly Crompton, Katie Field and Chloe Briance

Matches started well and we were ahead in several matches but then the tide turned. Matches that were up went down but undeterred our girls fought back and very nearly turned things around. Three matches went to the 16th hole and one to the 17th. Congratulations must go to Katie who won her match on the 14th hole with a splendid display of golf.

Tomorrow we shall play Kent before having a well deserved rest prior to our final match against Middlesex on Wednesday morning.
