Player Development Programme - 2024

The Player Development Plan has been developed to encourage new players with single figure handicaps to join the coaching programme, invitations extended via Lady Captains for members with a handicap of 9 or less. Our aim is to support existing players and improve the newer players' game of golf with our long term goal of increasing the number of ladies into the County structure. We're pleased to say the coaching programme is achieving these goals and we are building a strong nucleus of players.

Yesterday (Sunday 18th February) was our second Player Development Day and we arrived at West Hove Golf Club in drizzling rain following sustained rainfall overnight. The course was closed, however the forecast was optimistic for the afternoon. The session was well attended with players from our 1st, 2nd, junior and senior teams present.

The morning session commenced with a presentation from Ryan Fenwick, Sussex Lead Coach with insights and thoughts to consider in skills development and then a valuable Q&A session with Maddy who had joined the County Team in 2023. Maddy talked about her experience joining the team and her first County Match Week where nerves and the feelings of Imposter Syndrome came into play. The players were then split into two groups with one focussing on a pitching session on the range with Ryan whilst the other group had a session with Matt Miller, body conditioning coach who gave the team a talk on resistance bands and numerous strengthening exercises. The groups then swapped before drinks and a well deserved lunch.

During lunch the course reopened, and the players were able to set off and play nine holes with 4 clubs and a putter to apply some of the skills learnt earlier in the day.

Our thanks to Jane, Player Development lead at the SCLGA and both Ryan and Matt for their support and development of these sessions.
