Sussex 2nd Team vs Surrey 2nd Team Stovold Trophy 2023 - 15th August

 Playing our third Stovold Trophy match of the season, the Sussex 2nd Team players were delighted to see bright blue skies & sunshine as they arrived at Addington Palace GC on Tuesday morning. With the first Foursomes Tee Time set at 8.00am, it was a very early start for all the players as they went through their pre golf warm-up routines. 

The morning foursomes proved a challenge on this relatively unknown course which was extremely hilly, with very slick undulating greens. Surrey led from the front and secured two early wins. The middle match was a challenge for Sian Southerton & Delyth Roberts against a very strong Surrey pair. With 3 holes to play & 2 down, great teamwork produced an excellent late rally and ended with a final defiant 10ft putt from Sussex to end the extremely close match all square on the 18th . The result in the morning 2.5 - 0.5 to Surrey.

Fortified by lunch, with the sun continuing to shine, the wind dropped and fortunately so did the Sussex putts. There was some excellent golf played in all six matches. Surrey struck first with an early victory, but Sian Southerton & Sara Whittaker made great finishes to secure two wins for the team. With another Surrey point on the 16th hole, the match like the course became an uphill battle. 

Tracy Poulsom produced some brilliant approach play on the early back-nine holes and delivered another point with a devastating bunker shot on the 16th hole finishing just inches from the flag. With the overall match score now in doubt, it all came down to the last game which sadly ended on the 17th with Surrey managing to grab the point. The final result was a 5.5-3.5 win to Surrey.

All the matches were played in excellent spirit. Thank you to Addington Palace for the hospitality and to our County Vice Captain Pat Codd for supporting the team during the day.
