Stovold Trophy: Sussex vs Middlesex

The Sussex 2nd Team have made a winning start to their Stovold Trophy Campaign for 2023. For the first match we welcomed the Middlesex 2nd Team to Copthorne GC. the golf course was in great condition and the welcome & service both teams received from all the club staff was excellent.

In the morning Foursomes, Sussex were up & running early, quickly establishing the lead in all three matches. Sara Whittaker & Leanne Caffyn closed out their match 5&4, with some solid short game skills on display. A second point followed quickly, with another 5&4 win from the all Worthing pairing of Delyth Roberts & Jordan Ouano. For Jordan it was her first time playing in a Sussex representative match. In the third match, Sian Southerton & Rosie Hockey held off a spirited fight back from their Middlesex opponents to secure a 2up victory on the 18th green. Meaning Sussex led by 3 to 0 at lunchtime.

More great golf was played by both counties in the afternoon singles, despite the gusting wind and short rain showers making playing conditions quite challenging at times. Middlesex came out fighting in the afternoon singles and at times the overall match result was uncertain. In the end, Sara Whittaker & Rosie Hockey both delivered comprehensive 6&5 wins & Sian Southerton closed with two superb pars on the 17th & 18th holes to finish her match All Square.

The final match score was 5.5 to 3.5 to Sussex. Thank you to all the players pictured in their Foursomes Pairings and also to our County Captain Jane Covey, who spent the whole day supporting the team. All in all, a very solid start for the team, who move on to the next match vs Hampshire at Ham Manor GC on 25th July.
