Seniors Scratch League: 1st Match vs Kent: Report

Seniors Scratch League: 1st Match vs Kent (Tuesday 4th June, Knole Park GC)

The Seniors Scratch League kicked off yesterday with our first match vs Kent away at Knole Park. The seniors were excited to open the 2024 season against Kent with the strongest team they had put out for this fixture since 2019.

It had been a busy few days with all the players involved in the Sussex Championships except for Karen Sykes who is struggling with her foot. No problem Karen has got her medical exemption certificate and can have a buggy but the team were astounded to find that the club has no buggies due to the hills! Then the call came in that Captain Sara was dreading from Aileen Greenfield, she was struggling with her back and would not be able to play!

However, with excellent players stepping in and the team moving up two places the girls travelled to Knole Park and were met by a number of deer. Not old dear's but live and kicking deer were to be seen in huge numbers on most fairways and around greens!

Clarissa was first off followed by Paula, Katherine, Tracy, Sara and Rachelle. The team knew how important this match was having lost by a point the previous 2 years and thus Kent claiming the trophy. Sussex seniors fought hard on a course that was not particularly familiar to them. They battled forward and the only lost full point was that of Captain Sara.

The team did not seem to notice the turn in the weather which was cold and wet and just got on with the task in hand of gaining as many points as they could. What an amazing team with an overall victory of 4½ - 1½.

A great way to start the season and as long as we can keep everyone fit and healthy Sara feels we can get the Mulligan Larsen Trophy back to Sussex.

The next match is Friday 7th June at Worthing v Surrey.

Congratulations Team
