Sussex Seniors Report 2019
Sussex v Kent at Wildernesse GC, 9th July 2019
New Seniors’ League Captain Sara Whittaker got off to a flying start as Sussex won their first match v Kent at Wildernesse GC.
After 13 holes Sussex dominated as they were up in 4, down in 1 and one match halved. However, Kent staged a great comeback and four matches concluded on the 18th green.
The final result was Sussex 4, Kent 2 with full results as follows:
Aileen Greenfield won, Paula Carver won, Karen Sykes won, Teresa Ward lost, Sally Brown halved, Sara Whittaker halved.
Sussex v Middlesex at Ifield GC, 12th July 2019
A busy week for the ‘old girls’ with their 2nd match of the week, this time a home game against Middlesex hosted by Ifield in the glorious sunshine.
It seemed that a tough match was in store when non-paying captain Sara Whittaker saw the team through the 7th hole where the matches weren’t looking too good. We were down in the majority of matches, but the girls dug deep and started to turn things around on the back nine.
Aileen Greenfield lost on the 18th against well known Lulu Housman. Paula Carver had a convincing win 6 & 4. Clariissa Bushell overcame her opponent and her trolley winning on the 18th! Katherine Russell won 4 & 3 despite not having her wedges for 9 holes! Teresa Ward, after a slow start, got the better of her opponent 5 & 4 and home player Sally Brown won after going up the 18th all square.
A solid win for Sussex 5 – 1 in their second match of a series of 4. They now look forward to taking on Essex at Colchester on Monday 15th July.
Sussex v Essex at Colchester GC, 15th July 2019
After a trip through the Dartford Tunnel to Colchester, the Sussex Seniors were ready for their penultimate match against Essex.
Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances we were a match down before starting, so with only 5 players the team had the ‘bit between their teeth’ and knew there was work to be done.
Aileen Greenfield and Katherine Russell both finished on the 18th green, 1 up. Teresa Ward found her ‘A’ game and finished 6&4, as did Sara Whittaker winning 4&2. Sally Brown playing 4th also finished early 3&1.
This 5 – 1 win makes three out of three for the senior girls and with one match left to go against Surrey at home on August 28th we are hoping that the Mulligan Larsen Trophy will be retained by the Sussex Seniors. It’s all to play for at Mannings Heath next month.
