11th July 2019
Sussex v Hants 4 – 5
The 1st game of the season v Hampshire was at the lovely Meon Valley GC, Southampton.
Daisy Kane and Tracy Poulsom came in with a good win in the morning foursomes, with the other two pairs losing although Leanne Caffyn and Holly Compton put up a good fight.
All to play for in the afternoon singles. Holly and Leanne both came 2nd! Tracy took her partner to the 18th despite using borrowed wedges and finished 1 up. Daisy’s short game gave her a 2 – 1 victory. Alison had a tough ask playing Aileen Simpson although felt at home saying ‘good shot Aileen’! With a loss here it was down to Sara Whittaker to try and find another point. After a monster putt on the 17th to go all square on the 18th green, Sara gave Sussex another win and a fourth point.
A 5 – 4 loss away from home is most encouraging and we look forward to taking on Kent at Piltdown on Friday 19th July.
19th July 2019
Sussex v Kent 7.5 – 1.5
Sussex experience triumphed over Kent youth at Piltdown in the Stovold Trophy 2nd team match on Friday 19th July. The morning conditions were favourable and saw Sussex get off to a flying start winning all of the morning foursomes. In the afternoon the weather really deteriorated and Sussex showed a lot of resolve to further extend their lead in this match – winning the afternoon singles session 4 .5 to 1.5.
Very many thanks must go to Piltdown Golf Club for their generosity in hosting the match and for presenting the course in superb condition once more.

5th August 2019
Sussex v Middlesex 5.5 – 3.5
The Sussex second team travelled to Sudbury for the next round of the Stovold Trophy. After overcoming many traffic delays, 3 of the team arrived late on Sunday afternoon for a courtesy practise round generously provided by the Club.
The remaining team members travelled in the morning and the match began in drizzly and cool conditions. However, this did not deter the Sussex girls and they won 2 of the 3 matches, losing one on the 18th green.
After a good lunch, the team set forth again – this time in warm, sunny but very breezy conditions. The matches were close with another 2 games going to the 18th and Charlotte Topping hitting a superb lag putt to ensure she won the 18th to halve her match! Very exciting!
Sussex won the afternoon singles session 3.5 to 2.5 and winning the match overall by 5.5 points to 3.5 points.
The team are in action again for their final match v Surrey at Haywards Heath on Thursday 22nd August – why not come along and support them!
22nd August 2019
Sussex v Surrey 2 – 7
On Thursday 22nd August the Sussex 2nd team played their final match for the Stovold Trophy against Surrey, which turned out to be their toughest! The weather was fine, Haywards Heath GC was in great condition and the opposition were very strong! Half of the Surrey team had played the course during JCMW and after a good Summer holiday of golf they were at their best.
The Surrey team excelled with their strength of hitting and accuracy into the green. However, the Sussex team were not daunted and gave a very good account of themselves and showed fantastic team spirit and character as they fought every inch of the way. The result did not go our way and Surrey won 7-2.
Pat Johns says, “It has been my privilege to accompany the team on three of their matches this season and I would like to add a personal thank you to all the players who have been involved in these hard fought games. Thank you to Ann Carnegie for making the arrangements and we wish Sandra Holman our very best wishes for a continued recovery from her illness.”
The 2nd Team’s season is now over and we await the results from the remaining counties to see who will win the Stovold Trophy for 2019.
