It was an early start (as usual) at Copthorne Golf Club on Monday 18th August.  The weather looked set fair for the morning, but heavy showers were forecast for the afternoon – everyone hoped that the weatherman was wrong!

It was certainly going to be an exciting day, particularly with the introduction of three youngsters who had enjoyed great success at Junior County Match Week at Goodwood the week before.  Hopes were that they were still in that matchplay mind-set and they were – they were magnificent!  Fenella Buss and Hannah Duval won their foursomes in the morning comfortably 4&2, while Carol Smith with young Maddy Man narrowly lost due to some awesome putting by the opposition, albeit both playing really well.  A fabulous win by the other two pairings of Ann Howard/Alison Vans Agnew and Sally Brown/Sang Porter 5&4 each, put the team in a strong position 3-1 up by lunch time.

With only one loss in the afternoon singles, all three youngsters won their matches, Sally and Carol also chalked up wins and with Ann and Alison gaining honourable halves, Sussex won 9-3 – Well done team!

This now puts Sussex on top of the Stovold table.  Our final match is against Kent on Thursday 4th September at Wildernesse GC will decide the outcome of the Trophy – all to play for!
