The newly formed Seniors League (7 singles matches off scratch) saw our first match of the season played at a very welcoming Ifield the week before the Championships (venue choice not coincidental?!) Although still early in the season, the course was in good condition and it only rained gently for a few minutes.
Led by Jo Galway, Sussex had a good strong team playing on a home course so expectation was high in hoping to beat Surrey after losing to them quite substantially last year at Burhill. Unfortunately the first two matches did not go quite according to plan with Jo Galway and Katherine Russell being out played and losing their matches to Debbie Richards and Fiona Horrocks. However the next two matches were well won by Daisy Kane and Carol Smith beating Arja Rakiarc and Alison Gee. Joan Pullen was next and although putting up a good fight sadly lost to Scynthia Larson but luckily for Sussex bringing up the rear and new to seniors golf was Clarissa Bushell. Although down at the turn she made an excellent recovery to win her match against Delyth Roberts and therefore claim victory for Sussex.
Special thanks goes to Sally Brown (also Lady Captain at Ifield) who very kindly stood down as Surrey were disappointingly unable to field a full side of seven players due to injury and Mel Boyse, County President, for spending the day supporting the team.
