The semi-finals and finals of the Morrice Foursomes were played at Cowdray Park Golf Club on 28th August. 44 Sussex Golf Clubs took part in the annual knockout, starting in Spring of this year. The semi-finalists were Highwoods v Willingdon and Cottesmore v Royal Ashdown Forest.
The morning matches started a little overcast but ended in beautiful sunshine. Matches on the whole were close, Willingdon winning the 20th hole to take their team into the afternoon finals. Royal Ashdown won their 2nd and 3rd matches to take them into the final to play against Willingdon. Their last match winning with a putt on the 18th hole after a very nip and tuck game, which to be fair could have gone either way.
After a quick lunch Cottesmore were back out to play against Highwoods for third or fourth place, with Willingdon and Royal Ashdown following in the final. The weather turned a little with rain on and off but didn’t seem to dampen anybody’s spirits – all desperate for a win.
The first match between Highwoods and Cottesmore went to the 20th hole, the second time that day for the same Highwoods pair (they must be gluttons for punishment!). However, Cottesmore were the victors with their 2nd match winning on the 17th to give them 3rd place.
The final between Willingdon and Royal Ashdown was closely fought, with the first game all square on the 17th green when they were called in as Royal Ashdown’s 2nd and 3rd matches were victorious. Commiserations to the losing teams who made it this far, but offered to the spectators a great days golf.
Thanks must go to Sandra Barber, Cowdray Lady Captain, and her ladies for ball spotting and help with organisation. We also thank Cowdray Park Golf Club for putting this event on for the County. It’s never easy for the hosting clubs when we require morning and afternoon tees, including playoff holes, while they try to keep their members and green fees happily playing on the course, so we are hugely grateful for their patience with us.
