Copthorne hosted the Kathleen Rider Foursomes on Monday 11th June which saw 190 players teeing off on a slightly chilly morning but soon progressed into a beautiful sunny day with a stiffer breeze in the late afternoon. The course was reported to be in good condition considering one fairway had failed to fully recover from the inclement weather earlier in the year. Many players found the greens fairly fast and this was definitely reflected in the later scores when a stiff breeze probably made them feel even faster than suggested by the stimpmeter readings!!?!
Jo Turner, Kathleen Rider’s niece who kindly presented the trophy to the winners mentioned that this was the 61st Kathleen Rider Competition played since it began in 1957. This competition was initially played at Goodwood Golf Club by only a handful of Sussex clubs and now with 48 golf clubs contending this year, it was particularly apt that Golf At Goodwood were today’s winners with 67 points pipping the runners-up (East Sussex National) and the team on count back (Royal Ashdown Forest) by 1 point.
Thanks to Rosie Chisholm-Hill (Lady Captain) who with Sandy Flynn stepped in as markers when a club’s B pair had to withdraw. Thanks also go to the members who helped with the locker rooms availability and the beautiful flower arrangement. Thanks to the General Manager Peter Walter, the Proshop, Greens and Catering staff for their seamless delivery for the demands on their services due to the staggered arrival of the players throughout the day.
