This year’s President’s Trophy was transferred to Royal Ashdown Forest on their West Course at the last minute, and the host club teed off at 8am with 126 players from 42 clubs following them! Given the current Covid restrictions, the field was only down on 3 players from 2019 which goes to show the enthusiasm for competitive golf after such a long time!  A sunny Autumnal morning greeted the early players and although the weather started calmly, by mid-afternoon some of the later players were battling against 1 and 2 club winds.

The winners were definitely decided by a very spectacular back 9 score by one team thus outplaying the other high score team on count back.  The home team claimed the shot of the day by Jane Bowers who scored an eagle on the 15th hole! However, Royal Ashdown were narrowly pipped into 4th place by Brighton & Hove with their 75 points.

The winners with 77 points were East Sussex National with Judith Dingle, Sue Hollands and Alicia Phillips.

In 2nd place also with 77 points were Nevill GC with Annabel Buckland, Sarah Stuart and Junko Wates.

The greens staff should be thanked for presenting the course at it’s best but their keenness to do so contributed to some very fast greens which outwitted many players judging by their reports !!  Thanks must also go to the Catering Staff for their “picnic boxes”, and Lady Captain (Sue Rushworth) for her assistance with the organisation of the event.

One club said, “Thank you to the County for organising this event – it was very much appreciated and made us realise we had not played on another course for a very long time!”  Probably a sentiment echoed by many golfers this year.
