Sue ToddIt’s been a busy winter planning everything for 2014, and our Development for All programme with Lee Andrews and his team at Mid Sussex has been very popular and well supported. Due to its success we plan to start in the autumn this year. Our putting expert Paul Williams ran a very successful session and I am sure that all those who attended will see an improvement in their putting stroke as they work on their drills!

After the wettest winter on record and with many Sussex clubs unplayable, we can at last get back out there – the Divisional matches and Morrice Fours are all underway. It was a delight to hold our Scratch Foursomes at Nevill GC last week in their Centenary Year – a great success and there was some stunning golf played. I heard one lady say it was unusual weather as the sun shone for the whole three days! Congratulations to the Bognor Regis pair, Chloe Court and Heather Tidy, for their win.

At the recent England Golf Conference the overriding theme was the need for all County organisations to work together to halt the drop in player participation and club membership. David Joy, CEO England Golf, outlined the new 5 year strategy which has a real focus on increasing participation through clubs, counties and nationally. Our County Development Officer, Matt Warwick, will be working to put some of these new initiatives into action. ‘Golf Month’ which will run throughout May will see many Sussex clubs running schemes to attract new members. Please make sure you do everything you can to encourage people to take up golf and join a club.

We’re in our final preparations for County Match Week which this year in being played at Muswell Hill in Middlesex 9-13 June – make a note for your diary and come along to support our team. The team will be announced on the final day of the County Championships which is being played at East Brighton 30 May-1 June.  There’s still room for more entries for the event, so if your handicap is 14 or under, why not join in the fun – it’s a great weekend of golf. I look forward to seeing many of you out and about on the courses of Sussex during the season, let’s hope the sun keeps shining – play well and have some fun!

Sue Todd, County Captain 2013-15
