Sandy Lodge GC in Hertfordshire hosted the AIG Women’s British Open Pre- Qualifying competition on Monday 15th July. Sussex Team Coach, Hannah Ralph, took part and despite a poor start with 3 bogeys due to some missed putts, she played the next 10 holes 2 under par. On the 13th hole, an unlucky bounce took her ball out of bounds. She says “I kept calm and made birdie with my second ball but it was a costly bounce and I lost my place straight through to Final Qualifying for the Open”. On completion of the 18 holes, Hannah finished the round 3 over par.
Afterwards, Hannah waited almost 2 hours for the other competitors to finish and later discover that she was in the play-off with 12 others, playing for 7 spots. Hannah was in the 2nd group. The first group completed the 1st hole and waited for the 2nd group and 3rd groups to finish the hole. Those who scored a par or birdie, progressed on to the next play off hole. This continued for the next hole, and so on until players make mistakes and are eliminated. Hannah parred all 4 holes brilliantly and is now through to Final British Open Qualifying on 29th July at Ashridge GC.
She says, “I have always made it through to Final Qualifying but missed out on making “The Open” by a couple of shots… so let’s hope this year it will be a different story.”
We wish Hannah the best of luck and will follow with interest her progress on 29th July!
