Day 3 is the matchplay stage of the European Team Champs and the opposition is dependent on where England finished as a team after the stroke-play.  Seemingly like County Week on steroids!

England’s opponents were France who have been successful over the years.

The format is one foursomes match and 4 singles, there are no halved matches so everything has to be played to a conclusion.  Caroline Berry and Julie Wheeldon (Yorkshire) were the foursomes pairing and went 3 down at the turn but fought back to go 2 up, the French got it back so it went to the 18th where France came out on top.

Jackie Foster (Hertfordshire) put the first point on the board for England with a cracking 7&5 victory.  Helen Lowe (Leicestershire) fought back from going down but the French just held on so England were 2-1 down.  Paula Carver was playing last and came home a winner 5&3, so at this stage England were 2-2 and it’s all down to Aileen Greenfield.  Up she steps onto the brutal par 3 18th (see picture below) and rips one onto the green while the French girl came up short. Aileen two putted to put the game to bed and England are victorious – c’est magnifique!

Onto day 4 where England play the Irish – let’s hope the luck of the Irish is just a myth! #ComeonEngland
