Surrey hosted an excellent County Week at the superb setting of Burhill Golf Club, with all matches being played on the Old Course.
The expression “fine margins” comes to mind when reflecting on this year’s County Week and I promise you the scores certainly do not reflect the effort, team spirit and some fantastic play that our players showed throughout the week.
We lost the matches against Kent and Hampshire 2-3, with both of those being decided on the 18th green in the last match. Kent then proceeded to win the week. Surrey were always going to be formidable on their home course, and so it proved, but we still managed 1.5 points against them. The final match against Middlesex was another close fought game and the fighting spirit of our squad was demonstrated by Holly in her first singles match clawing her way back from 4 down to just lose on the 17th green!
A week of “what ifs” and “if onlys”, but that is golf. As always with Sussex, the matches were played with good sportsmanship and fine spirit – heads never dropped. The squad was well motivated by coach Ryan Fenwick and they all really valued his group coaching session on the Monday afternoon.
With four rookies never having played at a County Week for Sussex before, I believe we did ourselves proud. All of the players will have learnt and benefited from this experience.
My thanks go to coach Ryan Fenwick for his insight, encouragement and skill in coaching and for being my “rock” throughout the week. To Jane, our President, for all of her help and support and taking the load for organising all of the accommodation and food orders – hopefully you have stopped counting sandwiches by now Jane! To all of the caddies and supporters who came up – thank you – I know the players really appreciated your support and encouragement. To Surrey for hosting such a successful week and for organising the rain when we were not playing!
Many congratulations to Kent and we wish them well in the National Finals in September.
As a County Captain it is a huge privilege and pleasure to lead our players in County week – I just hope someone comes forward to enjoy that privilege and delight!
