Day 3 started with even better weather than Day 2 with smiling faces on the first tee from all competitors. Great camaraderie amongst the players which bodes well for County Match Week at Worthing Golf Club commencing 21st June.
The matches all day were a joy to watch. The second semi-final of the Championship Plate in the morning saw Emma Whitlock and Holly Crompton all square on 18th have to play the first hole, then the 18th, then back down the 1st (the Play off holes) before Holly won through to the afternoon final.
We thought we were in for the same again as two of the Championship semi-finalists, Paula Carver and Chloe Briance, came up the 18th fairway. Chloe took this match on the green without the need to head back to the first tee.
In the afternoon it was wonderful to see the two that went out in the semi-finals, Tracy Poulsom and Emma Whitlock follow and support the players that the pair lost to in the morning, with Clarissa Bushell. It appeared that Holly Crompton was going to have an early win going 6 up early in the round, but Charlotte Topping had other ideas and fought valiantly back. Eventually Holly took the match on the 17th.
The Championship finalists Chloe Briance and Yasmin Hang set off. Yasmin was definitely on her game and there was nothing that Chloe could do. The standard of golf from these finalists was wonderful – but Yasmin had the edge today.
This has been an exciting three days of golf at Highwoods Golf Club. We have had the support from all the members, and staff at the club. The course is in fantastic condition, well done the greens staff. Rebecca Prout, General Manager has gone out of her way to assist the smooth running of this event – we cannot thank her enough. Laura Bennett, the Lady Captain, her committee and lady members have supported us all weekend, ball spotting in the pouring rain on day one, and Laura has assisted the rest of the weekend in every single way possible. A huge thank you from SCLGA to all at Highwoods.
At prize giving County Captain Pat Johns announced the team that would be representing Sussex in County Match Week at Worthing Golf Club. There were some gasps of delighted surprise from some of the chosen players. We would like to wish all the players the very best of luck at the next 3 day event within a couple of weeks for these ladies – but judging from the friendships and support shown for each other this weekend we’ve got a great team spirit heading there.
