Alice 2014 Champ EB FlagCongratulations to our County Champion Alice Barnes (West Sussex). She has been selected for the Welsh ladies squad and will be training with them this winter. She is eligible because her dad Huw (our super tecchie supporting the SCLGA website!) was born in Wales and all his family on his mum’s side are Welsh. Having met a lot of the Welsh players and support team at the Welsh Open Alice was impressed with how friendly they were, so she decided to approach them directly to see if there were any opportunities for her.  A mad dash up to Wrexham to play 9 holes with the new national coach resulted in an invitation to join the female national squad.

Over the winter this will mean going to Celtic Manor and Wrexham once a month for training sessions, but to kick it all off there’s a weekend of ‘data gathering’ at Celtic Manor, four days in Portugal for warm weather training followed by a further weekend in Wrexham. Other support Alice will be given includes sports psychology, strength and conditioning, nutrition and hydration advice, equipment checks, performance lifestyle support, anti-doping workshops, specialist coaching, stats collation as well as advice from professional tour golfers. Alice says she’s confident that this focus will help improve her performance at national, county and individual level.

Fortunately Alice’s employer is being very supportive with flexible shifts, and she intends to take part in the Sussex 1st team development programme and newly launched Order of Merit as much as these other commitments allow.
