Sophie Kennard has just won the Dyke Golf Club’s Ladies Championships with the lowest gross score recorded in the event, the trophy dates back to 1926. Aged just 19, Sophie made a total of 11 birdies to score 71/70, 3 under par for the 36 hole event and winning by a margin of 18 shots (probably another record!) Winning both the Championship and the Handicap (net 67/66) Sophie’s handicap is down to 3. Having been Junior County Champion in 2011, her ever-encouraging dad had sponsored her £10 for each birdie, but he probably wasn’t expecting to have to pay up £110!
Afterwards at the Championship Dinner, Lady Captain Bali Bassan’s guest speaker Mickey Walker OBE presented the newly crowned Club Champion. As a regular Sky TV golf commentator and golf writer, Mickey is a familiar face to all golf fans. Having won six European titles, captained the Solheim Cup team 1990-96 and coached the Curtis Cup team she was awarded the OBE for services to golf. With numerous amusing anecdotes about her wide ranging and long golf career, Mickey helped make this an historic evening for the Dyke Golf Club.
