This year’s Beryl Pockett was played at Littlehampton GC on Friday 22nd August in glorious conditions, the players were thankful there wasn’t too much wind to contend with (although the rough proved penal for many!)

A field of 36 of the county’s top players contested the event, which is a 36 hole medal.  The aggregate of the County Championships (36 holes medal at East Brighton in May) and the Beryl Pockett event wins the Salver – 72 holes of stroke play is a real test of golf.

Beryl Pockett pictureThe event is steeped in history: it was presented in 1947 and first contested at Worthing the following year and became an aggregate of the Spring and Autumn Meetings.  Beryl Pockett was a well known international golfer before joining the war effort.  She was the WAAF’s Commanding Officer at Tangmere throughout the Second World War,  just up the road from Littlehampton.

Congratulations to this year’s winner, Daisy Wakelin of East Sussex National for her amazing golf (149+149=298).  Pictured right with Sue Todd, County Captain, and Mel Boyse, County President, she won by a margin of 11 shots from Worthing’s Karen Sykes picture below (154+155=309). Daisy’s great golf also saw her handicap cut from 3 to 2.

Sarah Cooper-Olsen (Worthing) pictured right, won the handicap event with a career best round of net 64 in her afternoon round to win by eight shots from Alice Gimson of Ham Manor.

Hannah Duval (Highwoods), the 2014 Junior Captain was also thrilled to get her first hole in one on the 6th hole, a 160 yard par 3.
