The Sussex County 1st Team versus 2nd Team match was played at Cowdray Golf on Sunday 20th October.  This Four Ball Better Ball match is always played in the best of spirits with the 1st team inevitably giving shots to the 2nd team.

After energy giving sandwiches, the teams teed off in sunshine – no rain in sight!  The matches were close; but the 1st team managed to win the day and retain the trophy.  Most matches went to the last couple of holes except the last match which saw the team of Hannah Ralph and Aileen Greenfield take the win with holes to spare.  Very unfair to put a professional and the English Senior Women’s Open Amateur Championship winner out as a team!  Their very worthy opponents enjoyed a lesson in golf which included 6 birdies – 5 under par after 13 holes. They admitted that they enjoyed every minute of playing with two such good golfers.

The spectators (all two of them) enjoyed watching the matches and the Sussex Mascot, Pip, went ball spotting with great energy.  Pat and I came home with a few more golf balls which were hiding in the bracken and thick rough!

Tea and cakes were enjoyed by both teams.  The cakes were really delicious thanks to the caterers at Cowdray and we were assured that they were very low in calories!  The course was in beautiful condition with the greens living up to their reputation as being tricky but true.  Everyone enjoyed the golf many thanks again to Cowdray golf for allowing this match to take place on their course.

The match trophy was presented to the 1st Team Manager Hannah Ralph by the County Captain, Ann Carnegie and 2nd team colours were presented to Sara Whittaker (Willingdon) and Holly Crompton (East Brighton) who both secured lots of points for Sussex during their Stovold matches this season.  Congratulations to both of them.
