COUNTY MATCH WEEK REPORT by Pat Johns 18th August 2017
Sussex have maintained their position within the South Region as the most consistent county by yet again coming runners up for the fourth successive year in this year’s JCMW – yet again by just half a point.
There were a few nervous faces on Monday morning, not only amongst the “Rookies” – Salysa and Lille-Beau, but also those players who had moved up the order from last year. A close win against Kent – last year’s winners- got us off to a really good start. 3 matches went to the 18th and Captain Megan brought home the win. A comfortable 5-2 win against hosts Hampshire in the afternoon saw Sussex sitting at the top of the table after Day 1.
The team warmed up with their stableford foursomes on Tuesday morning – Megan and Lille-Beau top scoring in the team with a creditable 36 points. In the afternoon we faced a very experienced and accomplished Middlesex team. 5 of their girls played in this year’s ladies County week at Littlestone and so although a little disappointing it was not very surprising that our front three players lost their matches. However, just like my little dog Pip, Sussex had a very waggy tail and we won all four of the final matches to clinch the win – Katie Field playing her first ever JCMW match winning on the 18th (lucky she didn’t know the tie depended on her!). Day 2 completed and Sussex still on top of the table.
On paper Surrey were the strongest team – and so it proved. Older, more experienced and confident players beat us 5-2 with 4 wins and two halves in the final match of the week. Our girls had tried their very hardest and given everything to win the match but, at the end of the day, experience was the telling factor.
This is actually very good news for Sussex – we have the ability, the skill and the passion – and we have a very young squad who will hopefully play together for many years to come. Whilst other counties were bemoaning the fact that they had so many new players – our new players were seamlessly integrated into the squad and made a magnificent contribution whether they won, halved or lost their matches.
The average age of our squad was 15 year – participating in an under 18 tournament.
Chloe was the youngest number 1 player at just 15 and Salysa the youngest number 2 at just 13.
The team spirit and togetherness of our players was once again the envy of other counties and commented on by other CJO’s and Royal Winchester members.
I am very proud of these players and this magnificent achievement. These are very exciting times for Girls Golf in Sussex and hopefully there is so much more success to come in future years.
I would like to thank not only the players for their dedication, but also the parents for their unfailing support. Thank you to Alan Edwards, whose company sponsored new shirts for the girls. Thank you also to all the many supporters who travelled to watch the girls. A huge thank you to Sandra Holman and Fenella Buss who were the support crew and roving on course reporters. The final thank you goes to Girls’ coach Ryan Fenwick who attended on the Sunday practise and all day Monday. His knowledge, encouragement and support are always very much appreciated by me and the girls.
Next year the tournament takes place in Middlesex at Bushy Park Golf Club and I wish the girls every success there!
