Sussex Seniors played their last friendly match of the season against Surrey, at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club on Thursday 5th October. By the time the team had arrived at 10.45am the sun had come out and it stayed warm and dry throughout the match. The course, a unique mix of parkland and downland character with its imposing tree lined fairways, provided a tough challenge.
In the first match Sally Brown (Ifield) and Mary Bell (Crowborough) battled hard but narrowly lost to a strong Surrey pairing. Rosie Hockey (Royal Ashdown Forest) and Judith Dingle (East Sussex National) in another hard fought match came through to win on the 18th hole. Surrey went back into the lead when their third pair just beat Kathy Donohoe (Chichester) and Ann Howard (Copthorne). Sadly due to injury that morning the Surrey Captain was left to play the final pairing of Carol Smith (Golf at Goodwood) and Carol Larkin (Rye) on her own. Despite borrowing Carol Larkin on the back nine holes the two Carol’s won the final match to secure a 2 – 2 draw.
Thanks were given to Tyrrells Wood for hosting the match. A special “Thank You” to everyone who played in the friendlies this year, particularly to Tessa Stockwell and Judith Dingle for standing in as Captain for the day. As a result of missing the match against Kent in August, it is hoped that we will have a home and away match in 2018.
