The Junior Elite Squad attended a tournament and training session at Dale Hill on Friday and Saturday 1-2 April, and followed this up with their final winter training session of the year with Ryan Fenwick at West Hove on Sunday. The commitment from the girls is outstanding and all of the Elite Squad attended one or both of the events.
The focus on day 1 on the Woosnam course was hitting the par 3’s in regulation and then putting. The following day saw this extended to hitting fairways as their course management had been a bit rusty on the first day. Playing the Old Course at Dale Hill also gave the girls chance of a practice round for their Spring Meeting being played the following Monday. Before their round the girls did a series of putting drills which certainly helped to lower their scores.
Having analysed the statistics of each girl’s rounds, Ryan gave advice on hitting accuracy off the tee, some putting techniques and course management. His message to the girls for this season was for them to have Honesty, Courage and Persistence.
Pat Johns, our Junior Organiser, would like to say very many thanks to Ryan for his challenging and helpful sessions with the girls over the winter, they always leave with something to think about and work on. She goes on to say ‘it’s no coincidence that the improvement in the Sussex Girls’ squad over the past 3 years has come about since Ryan’s input to their coaching sessions – on behalf of everybody, thank you Ryan’.
The Squad will be travelling to Sundridge Park next Sunday for their first practice round in preparation for Junior County Match Week in August and will be aiming to put into practice the lessons learned from the weekend.
