They say sport is character building and yesterday proved a very strong test for the girls who played in the Junior Championships at Haywards Heath. A month’s rain was forecast for the morning round, and despite the conditions there were some excellent scores and a very exciting competition for the Championship.
Play began at 8.00am in strong winds and heavy rain; at 9.30am play had to be suspended as the greens were flooded; 2 hours later, play recommenced and with the shortened lunch break, 36 holes were completed by 6.30pm.
Pat Johns, Junior Organiser – ‘You couldn’t find a better group of girls who remained positive and cheerful during the rain delay, which helped make a difficult day so much easier to manage!‘
It was a very close fought result with three girls all tied on 164 for the Championship. Lizzie Price (Nevill) continued her good form coming out on top from this year’s Junior Captain Fenella Buss (East Brighton) on countback, who just pipped Chloe Burdon (Nevill) on countback.
Congratulations to Chloe Burdon who retained the Under 15 Championship with her 164, runner-up was Salysa Mason (167).
The Handicap Championship saw our newcomer Salysa Mason triumph with some exceptional scoring. On a day when both rounds were Reductions Only, Salysa scored nett 71 in the morning and nett 69 in the afternoon for a total of 140 to win by 5 shots from Anna Wills (145), with Holly Crompton in third place (149).
