Following the recent announcement that Lizzie Price of Nevill GC has been appointed Sussex Junior Captain, we’re featuring her in our ‘Introducing…’ series. She got into golf through older brothers Tom and Mike, they both played and encouraged her to join in. Dad is a golfer and PE teacher, so Lizzie says he’s given her lots of encouragement. Lizzie is 16 and has a handicap of 4.8.
We caught up with her soon after the announcement was made at the Spring Meeting, which was played at Sweetwoods Park on 31st March.
What were your thoughts on becoming Sussex Junior Captain? My first thought was how much of an honour it is to be Sussex Captain for the junior girls. When Pat Johns told me and Jelina (Fernando) that we were short-listed, it was a great feeling to be worthy of the job since I was proposed by both team mates and Pat, our Junior Organiser. I was also obviously very excited to be chosen, it has made me very happy – I can’t wait for 2015 summer golf to start!
What do you hope to bring to the role? I hope to bring happiness and motivation to the girls golf. As a more experienced player now, I have learnt to love the game, which I hope I can pass on to younger players. I also hope I can act as a role model for the younger girls and help them develop their own golf.
What have you learnt from last year’s Junior County Match Week? I have learnt that as a team Sussex do very well! Last year we had great communication, which allowed us to pick the best possible team to play each day, so we could go out and play some very good golf. I also learnt that it is very important to motivate people if they are down or low, as it can be very important match further down the line.
Who would you ask to play with you to make up your dream four ball? It would have to be Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy – wow what fun!
